If 2012 brought about many changes in Hindi cinema and also in the choices of the audiences with some of the most unexpected films working well with the masses, 2013 only promises to take the change forward. The year has quite an interesting amalgam of films lined up right from the commercial films to the unconventional ones. Here's a low-down on what's in stores for all you movie buffs this year:
After their last debacle, the renowned filmmaker duo Abbas-Mustan is trying to regain their lost footing with the second installment of their hit franchise Race. While Saif Ali Khan and Anil Kapoor reprise their roles in Race 2, the film brings about an addition of actors like John Abraham, Deepika Padukone, Jacqueline Fernandez and Ameesha Patel. Slated for a January 25th release, Race 2 promises to be an edgy and action packed ride.
Akshay Kumar kickstars his year with a heist drama Special Chabbis. Directed by Neeraj Pandey who last gave us the award winning film A Wednesday takes to comedy this time around and gives a real life incident a comic twist. The film is apparently based on the real-life heist dated 19-Mar-1987 where an unknown man posing as CBI officer Mon Singh recruited 26 men and executed a daylight raid on the Opera House branch of Tribhovandas Bhimji Zaveri in Mumbai, and disappeared with jewellery worth lakhs. The film also stars Anupam Kher, Jimmy Shergill and Manoj Bajpayee. The actress sharing screen space with Akshay in the film is Kajal Aggarwal.
The trend of remakes continues as filmmaker Sajid Khan, who last made the blockbuster comedy Housefull 2, dishes out the remake of 1983 cult hit Himmatwala. The Jeetendra starrer original, that introduced pelvic thrusts and over the top action in Hindi cinema gets reprised with Ajay Devgn playing the lead role. South star Tamannaah pairs opposite Ajay. The film scheduled for a March release may also see the star of the original, Jeetendra playing a cameo.
When the news first broke out that the 1973 cult action drama Zanjeer would be remade, none could believe it. However, soon after came confirmed reports of filmmaker Apoorva Lakhia taking the task to excute the impossible. The film that catapulted iconic superstar Amitabh Bachchan to stardom and gave Hindi cinema its angry young man will now see South superstar Ram Charan Teja filling in the shoes of the legendary actor. While Ram is stepping into the shoes of Mr. Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt is all set to play the role of Sher Khan which was essayed stupendously by Pran in the original. Priyanka Chopra will be seen paired opposite Ram Charaj Teja.
Bhaag Milkha Bhaag:
Viacom 18 Motion Pictures' Bhaag Milkha Bhaag has created quite a furore ever since the first look and the trialer got revealed. Directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, the film traces the rise of the former Indian athlete Milkha Singh. Procuder-director-actor Farhan Akhtar will be seen playing the part of the Flying Sikh. Anil Kapoor's daughter Sonam has been paired opposite Farhan Akhtar. It is learnt that the producers of the film will donate the remunerations of the movie towards the benefit of needy athletes.
Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani:
The biggest casting coup in the recent times of Hindi cinema is that of bringing together ex-couple Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone for a film and only Karaj Johar could accomplish that. The filmmaker has roped in the ex-flames for a romantic film to be directed by Ayan Mukherji of the Wake Up Sid fame. The film surely has all eyes on it even before the first look is out.
Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai 2:
Slated for an August 8th release, OUATIM 2 happens to be the sequel of Ekta Kapoor's Ajay Devgn-Emraan Hashmi starrer Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai. Much like their previous attempt, Ekta Kapoor and Milan Luthria this time around too pull off a major casting coup by bringing together Akshay Kumar and Imran Khan for the first time as main protagonists in the film. While Kumar will be essaying the role modelled around Dawood Ibrahim, Imran Khan is said to be playing the role of Chota Rajan. Sonali Bendre and Sonakshi Sinha will also be a part of the film.
The first look of the Shah Rukh Khan starrer Chennai Express has already created quite a buzz amongst his fans. Arguably the most successful filmmaker Rohit Shetty takes up the task of bringing back the Om Shanti Om pair of SRK and Deepika Padukone in his ambitious project that follows Khan's character on a 35-hour train journey from Mumbai to Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu. True to Rohit Shetty's sensibilities, the film is supposedly a complete masala entertainer.
Yash Raj Films readies itself for the third installment of their blockbuster Dhoom series. Produced by Aditya Chopra, the film is written and directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, who had earlier written Dhoom and Dhoom 2 and directed Tashan. Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra the recurring stars of the earlier two parts reprise their roles of Jai Dixit and Ali respectively once again in Dhoom 3. However, it's the entry of Aamir Khan in the franchise that has garnered maximum attention. The superstar will be seen playing a negative role in the film. Katrina Kaif has also been roped in for the film. Dhoom 3 is slated for a Christmas release.
While both the Khans are all prepared with their individual films, the notorious Khan of the industry Salman is also not far behind. Although the release date of the film is not finalised, it is learnt that Salman khan's Kick is scheduled for a 2013 release too. The superstar who is currently revelling in the success of Dabangg 2 will start shooting for the film from April. Kick was earlier to be directed by Shirish Kunder, however, producer Sajid Nadiadwala later took over the mantle from Shirish and chose to direct the film too. Guess, the debacle of Joker led Shirish to lose out on this plum project.
In the times of sequels and series, it was only expected of Rakesh Roshan to have planned the next installment with his son Hrithik Roshan after the success of Koi Mil Gaya and Krrish. The mega budget film promises to be of a bigger and better scale compared to its predecessors. Hrithik Roshan who reprises the superhero role has been undergoing rigorous physical training since a year to fit the bill. Vivek Oberoi who hasn't had much luck at the box-office will be seen playing a complete baddie in the film.
The superhit pair of The Dirty Picture, Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan, make a comeback in Rajkumar Gupta's comedy Ghanchakkar. This UTV Motion Pictures' film will be Vidya's first film post her marriage to UTV head honcho Siddharth Roy Kapoor.
