In telling the story of the woman who invented the Miracle Mop, director-writer David O. Russell gets off to a wobbly start, builds to a wonderfully satirical middle and ends with a whimper. So, should you see Joy? I'd give it a shot. Sadly, Russell's movie is not a joy forever.

David O Russell's Joy is an intriguing but weirdly subdued and stylised film starring Jennifer Lawrence, an imperious beauty and stylish fashion plate.Joy has divided opinion and I find myself agnostic.

In all its mess and glory "Joy" seems to move toward a foreordained conclusion, it zigzags and covers its tracks along the way, sending its heroine on a roller-coaster ride of raised hopes and brutal disappointments and playing tricks with the audience's expectations.

The most surprising aspect of Joy is how mundane it feels. This is a story about the woman who invented the mop. That's about it. There's nothing exciting to subvert the mundaneness of the plot.

David O Russell has made an oddly old-fashioned movie, complete with surreal touches, absurd humour, over-the-top theatricality and a troupe of actors ready to lay down their lives for him.
