Fur trapper Hugh Glass battles man, beast and nature and survives. Oh yes, also the demons inside his head. Alexandro Gonzalez Innaritu is back to making you feel awed and yet claustrophobic simultaneously. It is a difficult watch, but only because the images are so powerful that you come away haunted.

The Revenant, therefore, is not just a film but a demonstration of how far the filmmaker can go visually. Whatever you see is breathtaking for sure, but the film doesn't really say anything about the human condition, even though the camerawork attempts to.

This is a Man vs Wild survival drama, a revenge saga and an existential journey, besides its artistic politicking. And at times, you feel it is too much to meld into a coherent film. Viewers looking for an overall emotional impact may be disappointed. It works not so much as a movie with a message but as a pure, visceral experience.

The action scenes, right from the first shot, pulsate with brilliance and will make your heart pound just minutes into the movie. The movie never slackens its pace for too long and keeps you on an adrenaline high right until the climax scenes. 'The Revenant' will ensure that you have a bloody good time at the movies.

The Revenant was a myth before it was a film, in a number of senses, and it probably should have stayed one.The most frustrating thing about The Revenant is that there's probably a good movie in there somewhere. The Revenant's visual inventiveness is spectacular but pointless.

"The Revenant" is an American foundation story, by turns soaring and overblown. In "The Revenant," a period drama reaching for tragedy, Leonardo DiCaprio plays the mountain man Hugh Glass, a figure straight out of American myth and history. The Revenant welcomes You to Paradise. Now Prepare to Fall.
