Good cops do bad things to save one cop's child, become bad cops. Bad cops now get badder. Street gangs get involved. Everyone shoots at each other and bad cops use this to kill good cops. There's a bigger cop trying to figure out what's wrong with bad cops. Then more shootouts happen. And everyone dies. This movie is that pointless.

Once the plot is set up the film offers nothing but scowling faces and a bunch of heist and corrupt cop drama cliches. If Hillcoat had trimmed down the number of characters Triple 9 would probably have had more focus and mystery instead of the loud and silly mess that it ultimately is.

With its barely two-hour running time and heist-centric construction, "Triple 9" can't hope to offer more than a murky approximation of that series' novelistic sweep. While a diverse, high-wattage cast including Casey Affleck and Kate Winslet should draw some takers, the Open Road release looks set for a minor killing at best.

Triple 9 fails is in maintaining a solid pace. Its peaks and wanes are inconsistent and by the end, the film peters out entirely. With interesting action set pieces, especially one of a raid on a suspect's home, the film will satiate action buffs. There's not much surprise.

While the film does serve up its share of thrills, it's all done with a slavish use of formula. While watching this action thriller, you'd constantly feel a sense of dejà vu. Like you've seen all that stuff before. should you watch Triple 9? No! Is it a slick thriller? Yes, but only in its looks. The story it's trying to tell isn't just uninspiring, it's stupid.

Triple 9 just isn't sturdily plotted enough to be suspenseful for more than a scene or two on the trot - its numerous borrowings from Michael Mann's Heat don't include that film's crystalline purity of character, action and motive. It feels like fragments of a great crime thriller that's yet to be made: enthralling up close, but the big picture isn't complete.
