The beginning of the movie, the music, the hero's charming presence, the funny appealing dialog keeps you so happy, you sort of believe that the movie is going to be better than fabulous. But the predictable turns the story takes throw the whole movie down a cliff and it just crashes.

The story is in the main set in a tangible world where Sufi poetry and music hold sway. Jugni just about works as a simple relationship drama. It is as an exploration of the power of music to heal hearts and fire the imagination that it genuinely gets going.

Jugni is a fabulous idea, but only on paper. There could have been interesting layers to the story-telling but the film turns out way too straight, flat and insipid.

Fittingly, music finds its way into the plot in an organic way. 'Jugni' works best when the characters are singing. The film turns clunky in other places, the first-time inexperience showing, but we don't really mind, because it has that rare thing : a soul, and of course, song.

Great intention, a contemporary story, good execution and soul-stirring music. What else could you want in a movie? The best thing about Jugni is the ease with which the director introduces us to the two dramatically different worlds.
