What was a fun, breezy, sharp and touching comedy about families and love and large people is now watered down, not so funny and tries very hard to be about families. This sequel is too late and too little. What worked then for the plus sized heroine who is now fashionably thin, is just tiresome.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 has its funny moments but doesn't come together to form a cohesive whole. The film is not unwatchable but then it is not worth climbing every mountain and fording every stream to watch either. You might as well wait for it to come on telly-the movie feels like a loosely strung together sitcom anyway.

Arriving 14 years after the original film, the problem with My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is that it's a little too late. The jokes now seem forced and the stereotypical nature of the characters seems jarring instead of lovable. The only takeaway is that the film could have benefitted with a co writer adding something special to Vardalos' unspectacular script.

This 14-years-later sequel is every bit as sitcom-ish and saccharine as its predecessor, but considerably less distinctive. But the curiosity of a presumably still-loyal fan base should at least allow for a respectable honeymoon period opposite "Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice," before this Universal release settles into its natural habitat as cable-TV filler.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 talks plenty about the need to change with the times. But no way does this movie buy into the concept of practice what you preach. This sequel to the popular 2002 rom-com is a big, fat waste of time. You can't go home again, at least in this movie. You can feel the strain all over this sequel to 2002's My Big Fat Greek Wedding. The charm of the original snuck up on us 14 years ago.

Nia Vardalos delves into her seemingly endless supply of big crude Greek stereotypes for a sequel to one of the most cancerously patronising romantic comedies of all time. Big Greek family stalks a browbeaten daughter in this shouty, ramshackle rom-com sequel.
