"Kabhi Alvidaa Na Kehna" (KANK) is indeed a definite sign of Karan Johar's maturation as an artiste and a filmmaker. This is a film that derives its inspiration energy from Karan's favourite filmmaker Yash Chopra's interesting but abortive "Silsila".

Karan Johar simply knows the tricks of the trade. With a star cast that cannot get better, the happening music composer trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and soothing lyrics from Javed Akhtar he ensures that his grand creation touches people. The poignant story is given life by the colossal cast.

I am not a hardcore Karan Johar fan, neither am I cynical about his flamboyant films. I watched KANK with an open mind and without pre-conceived notions. So on the credit of its content, KANK ended up being neither a superlative piece of cinema nor the abysmal film tagged by its hypercritical detractors. It's just the perfect balance of entertainment.

KANK is worth watching once, if only to see the work of a filmmaker trying to mature and break out of his mould, trying to find a voice of his own, even as he is confused and stubborn to not let go of the packaging and extravagance that has always marked his films.
