Eighty-year old Valiakath Moosa, son of a freedom fighter, is an alien to his own land. To the Indian government he is a Pakistani, and to the Pakistani government he is an Indian. He is one of hundreds of Malayalees who left to work in Karachi during the days of the British Raj. Many of them returned in the 1960s and are settled in Malappuram. They do not have a passport or even an address in the land they were born in. They are looked down upon as Pakistani spies. Moosa has a wife and children here who are Indian citizens, but Moosa himself is not considered a citizen of the country.

Paradesi, the third film written and directed by PT Kunjumuhammad, will have Mohanlal playing a totally different and very challenging role as Valiakath Moosa. Kavya Madhavan plays the role of a journalist investigating into life and livelihood of this ostracized section of society. Though the action takes place in the present, there are flashbacks to the 1960s. This is reflected in the costumes, settings and even in the songs. The film, which is being produced after a detailed study of the plight of these citizens of nowhere, has three songs sung by MG Sreekumar, Vineeth Srinivasan, Chithra and Sujatha. Shooting is nearing completion near Ottappalam.
