In his last movie Rock 'n Roll, scenarist-director Ranjith had zoomed in on the makers of film music. And this time, with Thirakatha, he is zooming in on filmmakers themselves. The film, produced under the banner of Varnachitra Big Screen and Capitol Theatre, has Prithviraj playing the lead role, that of a young filmmaker named Akbar Ahmed.

Akbar Ahmed has a passion for cinema. Along with his sweetheart Devayani, he runs a restaurant named 'Casablanca', named after the classic movie. He has a group of friends, who also share his passion for Cinema. Together they produce a film, which though a success, is subject to much criticism too.

Not deterred by criticisms, Akbar gets ready for his second movie. He decides to choose a very different kind of story, following Devayani's suggestion. The story that he plans for his second movie is to be based on the life of Malavika, who was once a very popular actress and whose present whereabouts is unknown. And when Akbar and his friends go tracking Malavika, they come face-to-face with a love story that was unknown to the world. And this love story forms the plot for Akbar's new film.

Samvritha Sunil gives company to Prithviraj's Akbar Ahmed as Devayani, while Priyamani becomes Malavika. Nishant Sagar plays a key role, as a cinematographer named Kevin Paul. Anoop Menon also plays a key role in the film, which has Ranjith himself appearing in a guest role. Thirakatha, which spans a period of three decades in the history of contemporary Malayalam Cinema, is getting ready for release.
