John Grogan, a columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer, moves to Miami with his wife Jenny for a newspaper job. The couple adopts Marley, a yellow labrador retriever, in order to give them a taste of parenthood, but the dog proves to be a hyperactive handful. Although he wreaks havoc on the household, gets expelled from obedience school, and becomes even more rambunctious when the children begin to arrive, he ultimately is considered an indispensable part of the family.
