It's a feat worth admiring that a debutant director has made a commercial film starring a super star in less than one day. At a time when production costs are sky-rocketing and producers are wondering how to contain the costs, what newcomer Prashanth Mambully has achieved deserves appreciation. Shot at a stretch in just over 17 hours, 'Bhagawan' is a full-length feature film that has all the ingredients of a commercial cinema, including as many as three songs.

Having said that, what one needs to ponder over is whether or not the average film goer is concerned about how long it took to produce a film or how much money was spent on it. The answer would in all probability be in the negative. What he'd be concerned about is whether he's getting his money's worth of entertainment out of the movie that he is watching.

Prashanth Mambully's 'Bhagawan' is pretty good when you consider the time frame it was shot in. Aside from that, the film leaves much to be wanted. On the whole the film is unimpressive and has flaws that would make you wonder why you spent your money and time watching it.

The story takes place in a hospital. The State Home Minister Zachariah Thomas (Sivaji Guruvayoor) is in the hospital because his wife is admitted there. She is to deliver their first child after ten long years of marriage. To say that the minister is all tensed up would be an understatement. The media meanwhile has been on his tail, bugging him with questions as to whether as the Home Minister it was appropriate on his part to be spending time with his wife when the State itself was under the threat of terrorist attacks.

In the mean time, Saifuddin (Daniel Balaji), a hard-core terrorist, is sitting in the hospital lobby watching things. He has definite plans in his mind, and he is not alone. Others in the group have taken up vantage positions within the hospital. It's then that 'Bhagawan', the omnipotent Mohanlal, makes his entry.

Dr. Balagopal (Mohanlal) is an obstetrician by profession, and is known to deliver babies safely. The minister's wife is his patient. Soon after she delivers her child however, Saifuddin and his gang swing into action. Saifuddin's plan is to kidnap the new born child, but he finds himself in a position where he is unable to identify the minister's child and so takes away three new born babies. Balagopal comes to know of it, and sets out to get the babies back.

Mohanlal is his usual self as Balagopal. Most of the others in the cast have done justice to their respective roles too, with Daniel Balaji deserving special mention. The plot is interesting too. But the pace that was seen in the shooting of the film is not seen in the movie itself. It is too dragging to be called a thriller. The script (written by the director himself) is to blame. The dialogues are unimpressive. And so is the background music and the songs. The cinematography aspect however, is good.

On the whole, 'Bhagawan' is not an impressive film. It's OK for a debut venture, but not at par with what some other debutants have delivered of late. The average film buff in any case is least bothered whether a director is a debutant or not. What he wants his money's worth, and 'Bhagawan' doesn't deliver.
