American Film Institute names year's best movies

  • Los Angeles, Dec 16 (DPA) The American Film Institute has named top 10 US movies of the year, including critical favourites like "The Dark Knight","Iron Man", "Wall-E" and "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button".

But it snubbed other movies considered top contenders for the Oscars like "Doubt", "The Reader", "Revolutionary Road", "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" and "The Visitor". "Slumdog Millionaire", frequently mentioned as an awards season contender, wasn't cited because it is a foreign production.

Also making the institute's top 10 list were "Frost/Nixon", "Milk", "Frozen River", "Gran Torino", "Wendy and Lucy", and "The Wrestler".

The list is chosen by a jury made up of critics, industry insiders and film academics. It was chaired by Entertainment Tonight film critic Leonard Maltin.
