Vaishali S makes Assam's Mekhala Chadar in vogue

  • Mumbai, March 25 (IANS) Mekhala Chadar is a traditional Assamese attire, which not everyone knows about, feels designer Vaishali S, who focused on the attire with her collection, which she unveiled Monday at the Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) Summer-Resort 2013.

"Mekhala Chadar is very beautiful and it is draped so well, but very few people know about it. This fabric was my inspiration. I wanted the entire India to know about it," she said.

Vaishali also gave work to 400 weavers in Assam.

"In Assam, every house has a loom and they work there daily. Most of the weavers are women. I am so happy as 400 weavers earned money because of their work," she said.

The clothes were traditional yet trendy.

"I wanted to make the silhouettes different and I felt that my clothes should not have any age bar," she said.

Through her collection, Vaishali focuses on different states in the country. She started her journey with Madhya Pradesh then Maharashtra, West Bengal and now Assam.

She revealed that her next collection will be inspired by Benaras, in Uttar Pradesh.
