S.J. Suryah, Namitha in Vyabari

S.J. Suryah, Namitha in Vyabari

  • Cinema Paradise's new creation "Vyabari" (Merchant), directed by Shakti Chidambaram, has S.J. Suryah in the lead role. Namitha, Tamana and Malavika act opposite Suryah.

While Namitha is the director's 'lucky mascot', Tamana was one of the heroines in the much hyped bilingual film "Kedi" in Tamil and "Jadoo" in Telugu which was directed by A.M. Ratnam's son, Jothikrishna.

The theme of "Vyabari" is that 'money is not all in life'. Namitha plays the role of enchanting airhostess. Tamana's character is one of a homely girl.

Some of the scenes printed in the invitation card for the pooja and launch of "Vyabari", are considered to be brazenly erotic which has raised a storm in Kollywood circles.

When this was brought to the attention of Director Shakti Chidambaram, he said glamour occupies big space in the new film "Vyabari"." People and I like this."

"The bathroom and the bedroom are the two places where a young couple could be as intimate as they could be. Bedroom scenes have now become so common in Tamil films that I thought I could change this and set a new trend by bringing out in sharp focus the intense and intimate physical relationship between a young man and his lover using the bathroom. (One of the pictures printed in the invitation card shows Suryah and Namitha in bath towels in the bathroom.). This is just to show how intimate Suryah, the hero, and Namitha, one of the three heroines, could get. These scenes are only symbolic and nothing erotic about them," Chidambaram said.

Namitha, who is synonymous with glamour, also has justified her role and said it is in keeping with her image.

Elaborating, she added: "I have an image of my own among Tamil fans. I carefully select films in which I act. Glamour is my forte, but I won't exceed my limits. I have drawn a clear line which I strictly adhere to Glamour is an essential part of cinema and my role as airhostess in "Vyabari' gives me a lot of scope to bring out my acting talent as a glamour girl. . My character is no doubt glamorous, but definitely not obscene or vulgar.''

Tamana said she won't mind acting in a film with more than one heroine. "It really does not matter as long as you do your part well and make an impact."

Director-turned-hero Suryah's controversial film "New" brought him the sobriquet "the sultan of sleaze.'' "Vyabari" may make this title stick.
