'Dhoni' comes in a time when everybody needs inspiration to the fullest. The film deals with the most common element that unites passion and success together. Loosely inspired from several films such as 3 Idiots, Taare Zameen Par; 'Dhoni' is a heartwarming story of father-son relationship that goes beyond usual cinema experience.
Subbu, a doting father has to take care of his daughter and son Karthik after the demise of his wife. He dreams of providing his children with the best education possible however his son loves cricket more than anything in the world. Karthik joins a cricket academy and with the mentorship of Naseer, masters the game. Come class tenth examinations, the school authorities decide to drop Karthik from school due to lack of interest and deteriorating performance in studies. Furious Subbu, knowing the news about his son's dismissal from School, slaps him, who swoons down and gets injured in his head only to slip into coma. Soon, the father realizes how much Karthik loved cricket and therefore wages a war to make authorities concerned understand that education has become a bane on children.
It's a film made by Prakash Raj, for Prakash Raj that screams out loud one name throughout, Prakash Raj. He carries off the film on his shoulder and gives it few signature moments that will make you stand up and applaud for him.
The film poignantly explains what kind of impact education is leaving upon children of today's generation. Neither do students understand why they go to school nor do parents understand why they should send their children to school. However, all that parents want from their children is that they succeed with flying colors and flourish in life. Seldom do parents understand what their children want; they're so blinded by the idea of education that most of the times they push their children to limits of excellence, when they're supposed to push them to pursue what they love or passionate about. 'Dhoni' as a film emphasizes on the fact that parents should let their kids choose or pursue things that they love than pushing them to master subjects in school.
Prakash Raj as the responsible father brings out adequate emotions to strike a chord in everyone's hearts, while Karthik, the son played by Akash, real son of director Puri Jagannadh, is a treat to watch and displays signs of becoming one among the next would be heroes. Brahmanandam and Prabhu Deva's cameo duly appeals one and all and provides brief moments of laughter.
Music by Illayaraja is soothing and memorable; it serves as a blessing to the film. Cinematography by K.V Guhan adds flavor to the cinema, as it is bright and catchy.
