Idiots Malayalam Movie
'Idiots' is a film that is deficient in humor, drama and character development. It's the kind of film into which, even if you venture in with rock-bottom expectations, you are likely to walk out terribly distraught and disappointed.
A girl (Sanusha) who has been deceived in love, seeks to wreak vengeance on her ex-lover, by hiring a hoodlum called Beeran (Vijayaraghavan)to kill herself. Beeran, on his part, outsources the job to Freddy (Baburaj), a fruit juice maker, who lands up on her doorstep with a few fruits and a blender. A thief (Asif Ali) who has climbed into her room is surprised to see that the girl has decided to end it all.
Almost all of it happens one night. And the night is endless. Endless, as in E-N-D-L-E-S-S. You yawn, twitch and turn around in your seats, drop your heads in weariness and shake off the exhaustion, and the night is still on.
One thing I do remember is wondering what on earth is happening in this film. I also remember having the thought that the film resembles a formless creature, which you examine all over and finally chalk out its head and tail, only to realize at the very end that they are just the other way round.
I wouldn't suggest that the script goes haywire after a while, since it doesn't have a clue as to where it's headed right from the very start. Confused is a very light term which could be used in the context; clueless about intentions would any day be better.
The horn honking joke in 'Mayamohini' is further extended to unbelievable bits in 'Idiots', thanks to Sunil Sukhada in drag. Instead of the single horn in 'Mayamohini', Sukhada, who plays a shrill sounding cop, arms himself with a couple of them, with almost everyone around wanting to honk them away to glory.
The lead characters are nameless in the film, and while the character played by Asif Ali calls himself Messi, he affirms that it isn't his real name. The girl who is out to end her life is nameless as well, but the question is, who really cares?!
There is absolutely nothing to talk about the performances either. Asif Ali carries on with his act in 'Idiots' as well, while Baburaj plays down his part a bit. Sanusha needs a good dress designer at the earliest, while Vijayaraghavan is wasted in an absurd role.
The best things about the film are the frames carefully captured by Varma, some of which at least look totally out of the world. Sadly, they don't belong to a film like 'Idiots', which is hell bent on not making any sense whatsoever.
The film brands those leading characters as 'Idiots' right from the start, and they get numbered from Idiot 1 to around 6 or 7. You patiently wait and look around and see the odd faces around you in the cinema hall, and add up to those numbers; counting you along with the rest of the viewers ion to the list, without much of a fuss.
