Not a bad movie, though not a particularly brilliant one. See it or miss it out, it won't matter much.

Viji Tampy's 'Nammal Thammil' has the right mix of all ingredients. It begins as a campus caper, with all the elements of a campus flick thrown in. Romance, songs and humour, and a sufficient dosage of action too, are part of the film's plot. And later, we get some family sentiments, drama et al. Viji Tampy, who has delivered many hits in the past, has managed to blend all the elements in such a way as to keep the film from being a bore, and is OK for one-time viewing.

The problem with the film is the undue delay in its release, for it has been lying in the cans for quite some time. If it had been released a few years back, the film would have fared better at the box office. As of now, the turn out for the movie is not very encouraging.

Vicky and Anu are students of an engineering college and are friends, or, as Vicky says, "more than friends". They love each other, but theirs is a crazy kind of love. While Vicky, who is the newly chosen College Union Chairman, is the son of IAS Officer Ramachandran Nair, Anu is the daughter of a brilliant journalist called Kariyaachan. While Kariyaachan treats his daughter like a friend, Ramachandran Nair is the typical kind of father who always blames his son for being rather irresponsible and carefree.

Vicky is the hero of the campus and excels in sports and all other things, including fist-fights when it comes to that. Roy Paul, another student of the college, was Vicky's rival in the college elections and also on the romantic front. Roy loves Anu and wants to make her his own, by getting Vicky out of the way.

In the meantime Anu quarrels with Vicky on an issue, following a misunderstanding. She distances herself from him. In the meantime John Rose, called by all as Johnny, the son of a lady IAS Officer Rose Alex, gets admitted in the college. He is one of Anu's childhood friends. Anu gets close to Johnny, at the same time avoiding Vicky. Meanwhile Vicky, who is the victim to a very grave misunderstanding, gets entangled in problems after problems. The story takes a turn from here.

Prithviraj as Vicky, Indrajith as Johnny and Geethu Mohandas as Anu suit their respective roles. Of course they look younger than they now are, because the film was shot some years back. Jijoy, who has been seen in films like 'Meghmalhaar', 'Shivam' etc, is OK as Roy. Balachandra Menon as Ramachandran Nair, Suhasini as Rose Alex and Revathy as Vicky's mother Lakshmi are their usual selves. Jagathy Sreekumar as the college principal is impressive.

The songs, of which "June-ile Nilaamazhayil…" has already turned a hit, have been filmed rather well. Technical aspects are in sync with the theme and the mood. To sum up, 'Nammal Thammil' is an OK kind of entertainer. It moves along predictable lines and offers nothing new, but it won't disappoint those who know what to expect out of a Viji Tampy brand of entertainer. Not a bad movie, though not a particularly brilliant one. See it or miss it out, it won't matter much.
