A compromised screenplay notwithstanding Bajirao Mastani sets standards high. Bhansali outdoes himself at many levels. Watch the film for the sheer scale and scintillating performances.

Not very often do you come across a performance that leaves you so satisfied that you feel it is bigger than the film. Ranveer Singh's portrayal of Peshwa Bajirao is almost there. Except that Sanjay Leela Bhansali's vision equals Singh's effort. Bajirao Mastani is nothing short of epic when it comes to the scale that the director mounts it in.

Each and every frame of Bajirao Mastani speaks of the hard work that Bhansali and his team has put in. It is dreamt than executed, such vision. From the war sequences to the songs, or just the sets. Needless to say he has some of the best names in the industry working with him, be it Sudeep Chatterjee (cinematographer) or Shyam Kaushal (action). And Bhansali keeps the department of music to himself.

Just wish that he had used as much talent and time in completing his screenplay. A rather stretched film, Bajirao Mastani is exciting till midpoint. Beyond that there is an evident lack of steam, which fizzles out by the end. The end is way to convenient and yet scattered. And he often resorts to the songs, as ever, without purpose.

But then Ranveer 'Bajirao' Singh comes to rescue. Playing a Marathi general the actor wipes out any possible comparison that may have ever risen. He makes one wonder how did Bhansali ever think of another actor in the same role. For the uninitiated, Bajirao Mastani was first announced with Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai.

Ranveer is supported very well by Priyanka Chopra, who plays Kashibai. She is immaculate, easily overshadowing the gorgeous Deepika Padukone, who comes up with a great performance too. It is these actors that make Bajirao Mastani what it is. Also, the worth the mention is Tanvi Azmi.

A compromised screenplay notwithstanding Bajirao Mastani sets standards high. Bhansali outdoes himself at many levels. Watch the film for the sheer scale and scintillating performances.
