If Venkat Prabhu was Srini Mama, then Premji would be his Suresh Raina... Sure enough, in Masss aka Maasilamani aka Maasu (so much for the tax just like Mama who runs a multi million dollar franchise with 5 lac rupees) we have him in his usual form... he blows hot, he blows cold, well at least he... It is supposed to be sixer, but sadly, Srini Mama's mistimed hook lands well short of the boundary line and all Surya can muster is a couple of runs. The movie is like CSK in IPL 8... Stuttering and stammering towards the finish line, but just not enough...

We have Surya doing a Baz in one real good intro scene (SPOILER ALERT) as the daddy... Nayan is there in the movie, but is relegated to Hussey's role as the twelfth man... She tries to save the injured Surya in the penultimate scene and that's all there is to her role. The supporting cast is adequate and we have the usual suspects retained as the core team, but man, that is just not enough. As you would expect, the plot is wafer thin and given the supernatural elements, willing suspension of disbelief is more of a necessity than a choice...

Surya is a conman, trolls folks, falls in love, then sees dead people, cons more folks, rakes in the moolah and just when you wonder what is going on, enters the big daddy. A flash back showing the origins of the land mafia and corrupt cops and a few nods to the successes of the Chennai 28 cast keep us occupied as the 2nd half speeds to the climax where the hero kills the bad guys. Now, if you are wondering what the X factor in the movie is, there isn't one. But in making you believe there is an X factor, the director has succeeded and in parallel, that is the Jaddu of the movie. The supporting cast is adequate with Partheepan (as Ashish Nehra) and a hot chick in tight police dress (as the hot chick in tight police dress) adding khakhi color to the colourful movie.

In spite of having 2 heroines, there is no Kodana Kodi or even a Mississippi Mississippi... That was disappointing especially for a fan that watches IPL just for the Cheer Girls. The movie in paper has a nice concept... albeit ripped off the sixth sense (for the director's 6th movie, a sixer... get it?) But instead of giving us moments that genuinely touch us like the sequence where the hero fulfils the dead folks' last wishes, we are left with a tale worthy of sitting on top of Vijayakumar or Ravichandran's "done list" of the 70s...

Maybe the movie will appeal to kids... But given how the movie industry killed the 7 year old in me a few movies ago, I am gonna wish Surya and VP better luck, for the next one...
