Editor Anthony, the mastermind behind many successful films, makes a surefooted debut in direction in Oru Naal Iravil, a remake of acclaimed Malayalam thriller Shutter. The human values, social values, ethics, familial bond and trustworthiness are broadly covered with subtlety in this 106-minute film which is as racy and steady as it could get.

Sekar (Sathyaraj) has worked his ass out in Singapore and is back home now. He is a respected businessman in his locality and has a bunch of friends who won't hesitate to speak behind his back. When Sekar catches his daughter red-handed while she roams with her classmate in a bike, he becomes furious and takes an instant decision to get her married. But, he faces opposition from his wife, who shows her open disrespect for his decision.

A disturbed Sekar seeks solace by boozing out with his friends inside a shuttered shop. On his way back home, he finds himself pulled in towards a prostitute waiting for a customer at the bus stop. When she too expresses interest, Sekar decides to take her to a hotel room but in vain. Finally, the auto driver chirps in with the idea of taking her to his shuttered shop. Sekar and Thangam (prostitute played by Anumol) agree on it only to get trapped inside the shop for the next 24 hours. The consequences are narrated by a series of events that reek of sincere human emotions.

The film lays bare its honest characters by putting them in challenging circumstances. It unmasks the reality with an earnest approach. The story-telling is smooth and fluid, providing weight to each character without sidelining the other.

The background score composed by Navin is adeptly used in appropriate situations to depict right amount of emotions. The camerawork done by MS Prabhu is brilliant considering the fact that a large chunk of scenes is shot inside the shutter during the night time.

It is this beautiful synergy that makes the film work. Director Anthony has infused few fresh scenes in the remake by getting rid of few from the original. It has definitely worked well in his favor and perfectly suits the sensibilities of Tamil audiences.
