Unattractive, definitely not entertaining.

Some years back I had watched an abysmal film produced under Ram Gopal Varma's banner. The film was called Go and it was directed by a newbie Manish Shirvastava. I had wished then that Manish finds his rhythm if he continues making movies, lest we are made to face similar films from him in future. Alas! Life comes with its own ironies.

This time Manish brings Charlie Kay Chakkar Mein, a film I could define as 'a wannabe thriller gone miserably wrong'. For a genre that needs some solid grip, the director did not seem to have any as the screenplay goes berserk at a rather uneven pace.

The film is about a murder investigation. A few spoilt youngsters happen to get into a brawl with another young man which results in the later's death. Now it is up to these kids to carry out a job that the victim was assigned to complete. They have to turn drug peddlers to save their lives but end up getting killed one by one. And even as they get killed one of them is busy making out with just about anyone while another shoots everything that's happening around him. These videos are what turn into clues as they are watched by the investigator (Naseer).

A rather dull first half concentrates on setting up the murder and the mystery while the second half attempts to solve the mess, only creating loops that function as hurdles. So dismal is the product that even a classy Naseeruddin Shah fails to capture attention. Wonder what kept his attention while he shot for this drab film. And yes, actor Amit Sial, who was last seen in Titli, is also the writer of this film. (Note: Good actors do not necessarily make effective writers.)

An attempt to create a fun caper ends up an unattractive, definitely not entertaining, batter of crime, drugs, murder and police. As the end credits rolled I walk out humming the song from the opening track 'Who the f is Charlie' with a slight innovation of my own. "Why the f see Charlie?" Can't find an answer to it yet; None that I can suggest you at least!
