Pencil is a disappointing murder mystery as the first half is wasted only for establishing the characters and conflicts between the leads. The second half is further disappointing as the director failed to establish the murder mystery with gripping and tight narration.

Shiva (GV Prakash Kumar) is a School Topper who is madly in love (one sided love) with his classmate Maaya Devineni (Sri Divya). There is also an arrogant brat, Nitin (Shaariq Hassan). He is the son of Telugu Superstar Suresh Babu, and is known to create unnecessary troubles to every one in the school. Shiva gets a chance to deliver a speech at UNESCO and for that Shiva prepares two years for that. Nitin burns the speech wasting Shiva's two years of hard work. Suddenly, Nitin gets killed with a Pencil and Shiva is suspected. Rest of the story is all about What really happened? Who killed Nitin? How the mystery is unravelled.

This is the second film of GV Prakash. He had shown good improvisation from his debut film, Trisha Ledha Nayantara. But he is yet to improve a lot in expressions but then his selection of scripts is his strength. Sri Divya is impressive as Maaya Devineni who is seen as a brave girl with good clarity on life. Shaariq Hassan who played the villain in the film, is an asset. He performed the role at ease. VT Ganeshan managed some laughs here and there while others are fine in their roles.

Mani Nagaraj, the debut director came up with a wafer thin story for the film. The major disappointment is a poor screenplay and disappointing narration. A murder mystery needs the suspense point to be maintained till the end, keeping the audience guessing. But in this case, the movie is predicting from start to end, that defeated the very purpose of the thriller story.

The music album scored by GV Prakash is very mediocre as the tunes are disappointing. Further the Telugu adaptation made the songs further disappointing. However the re-recording is very good. Gopi Amarnath did a very good job with the camera with excellent lighting and framing which enhanced the mood of the film. Editor Anthony should have been a lot better. Rajeevan's Art work is good and the stunts composed by Super and Dileep Subbarayan are nice. Production values are good.

Finally, Pencil is a disappointing murder mystery as the first half is wasted only for establishing the characters and conflicts between the leads. The second half is further disappointing as the director failed to establish the murder mystery with gripping and tight narration.
