Kavi Uddheshichathu..? Malayalam Movie
Simple tales can move. And if expectations are kept low some movies can keep you fairly interested,even if thematic novelty or narrative exuberance may be hard to find.Kavi Udheshichathu has an interesting title and at a time when big budget extravaganzas are dominating the screens,the film is attempting to chart its own course without much hoopla.The ingredients are pretty commonplace with humour laced with romance in the background of a sport being the crux.
The story takes place in a village named Allimoola.There is a nostalgic air about the way things pan out.Volleyball is one of the most popular sports,especially in our hinterlands and our village has also got youth smitten by the craze for this pulse racing sport.Jimmy (Asif Ali) and his friends are into this sport and have a team.They have a passion for the game and the initial exchanges give a taste of what is to come.
Then we have Vattathil Bosco(Narain) and his sidekicks.The rustic setting comes alive with sporting rivalries and romantic interludes.Jimmy who is in love with Bosco's sister Jasmine (Anju Kurian),doesn't expectedly get along too well with her brother. Bosco doesn't allow himself to be pipped in this game and he has an eye on Jimmy's sister.Then there is that typical police officer played by Saiju Kurup who keeps a bad equation with the protagonist.Kavi Udheshichathu revolves around Jimmy and Vattathil Bosco and their efforts to fulfill their love and Jimmy's attempts to take revenge on the police officer.As I said at the outset there is nothing earth shattering about the film.It starts off mildly and progresses sedately to culminate in a decent manner.
Biju Menon who arrives in the latter half as Minnal Simon does perk up the pace with his one-liners and comic interventions.Kavi Udheshichathu has beautiful frames and the charm of a tranquil village is captured with elan.
The script doesn't explore the depths of characters and the flow of the narrative does appear a bit flawed on a few occasions as the background of certain characters aren't well established. Asif Ali looks comfortable in his zone and gives a good account of himself,while Balu Varghese, Abhishek and Sudhi Koppa as his foils have done justice to their roles.
And it is refreshing to see Narain in a role that doesn't need him to be intense.The movie has brought out the comic side of him and the actor does look convincing.Lena's Gladis, an entrepreneur who comes riding a bullet,is also a good casting. Anju Kurian appears in a small role, but she makes her presence felt.As a director Thomas Liju Thomas appears to be in control in his debut vehicle.He doesn't attempt anything sensational and whatever he may have envisioned as an end product,Kavi Udheshichathu does end up without being an insufferable effort.
