Sathriyan has absolutely nothing special in terms of performances or music or screenplay or story. So why take the trouble to watch it in theatres.

Sathriyan, a power-packed title from Vijayakanth's 90s starrer, the yesteryear movie would certainly make one recollect the famous line "Varanum, pazhaya Panneerselvama varanum" - you should rise and arrive like the old Panneerselvam. Of course, Thilakan's Malayalam accent played its part for the recall value. But, that movie exposed the subtle side of Vijayakanth as the 'dirty harry' cop.

After 27 years, the same title has been roped for a Vikram Prabhu starrer and here it infers a rowdy. In other words, the evolutionary acceptance of the 'hero' in contemporary Kollywood. However, both the characters in both the movies, then and now are warriors in their own right. The similarity ends there and so does the story.

Samuthiram, a goon in Trichy, gets murdered by his rival gang. Guna (Vikram Prabhu), a key man in Samuthiram's gang is tasked to protect Samuthiram's daughter, Niranjana (Manjima), as she is threatened by some locals. Niranjana falls for Guna and wants him to reform and give up his goon life. Did Guna reform or did the gangsters have their revenge forms the rest of this soggy tale!

The movie had hardly anything going for it. Though Vikram Prabhu as the dreaded goon looked the part, had a very stiff body language and his expressions badly need a facelift. Manjima's role as that of the stubborn daughter of a goon was somewhat convincing. Since the screenplay was a drag, it came across as a rhetoric.

We've seen these men a humpty number of times in so many movies in the past. We've heard dialogues like "Kathi eduthuvanuku kathiaala thaan saavu" - for the one who goes for the knife, it would define his end. And, finally, we've seen those happy endings a million times.

There's absolutely nothing special in terms of performances or music or screenplay or story. So why take the trouble to watch it in theatres. Wait for one of the channels or legal streamers to bring it to your doorstep and decide for yourself!
