'Kammara Sambhavam' is about how lies can be the strong ingredients for creating history of a person or an event. Seemingly an interesting theme, the prolonged narration is exasperating and the melodramatic situations spoil what could have been an engaging creation.

Director Rathish Ambat's debut film explores how history is made by distorting the facts in favor of a group. The undercurrent sarcasm in "Kammara Sambhavam" can be realized in the situation when a population embraces the 'truth', which is the manipulation of real incidents. Due to the amalgamation of baffling situations, Rathish partially succeeds in bringing out the sarcastic intentions effectively.

It all begins when a group of liquor barons team up to discuss on a possible way to lift the ban on liquor in Kerala. One of them has a rather curious idea of reviving a now obsolete political party named Indian Liberation Party. For that they need a leader with a strong historical background.

They choose Kammaran Nambiar (Dileep), a shrewd, wily old man who narrates his story to a successful Tamil film director Pulikesi (Bobby Simha). Written by actor-writer Murali Gopy, the lavishly eloquent screenplay expands its horizons through the lives of Kammaran Nambiar (Dileep) and Othenan Nambiar (Siddharth) during the 1940's when India was under the British Rule. Set in the pre-independence era, the film establishes the life of Kammaran and his scheming acts at the outset.

Dileep's character and the exploitation of the poor, who lives on the Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border of a hillside village in Kerala, grab your attention. As a cunning quack, Kammaran's malicious acts provide the required intriguing situations in the first half. Dileep effortlessly portrays Kammaran with a keen sense of mannerisms.

Kammaran, who was said to be the leader of the political party ILP during the freedom struggle, is required by some people now with vested interests. Here Gopy intends to generate the sarcasm in the script but it takes the path of beating around the bush (the movie runs about 182 minutes). The plot seems to be pretty heavy to highlight the tug-of-war for power and political shenanigans in an amusing way. Obviously, the flow of intended satire seldom occurs.

The characters, including Kelu Nambiar (Murali Gopy) and Othenan, appear before us in another form of the interpretation of Kammaran's life by a filmmaker Pulikesi, essayed by Bobby Simha. From this part, the exasperating moments start to creep in the film and it points to the necessity of a tout trimming by editor Suresh Urs.

The film is totally focused on Dileep and he breathes life into the character of Kammaran. His body language and dialogue delivery is brilliant in three different get ups, one of them as a 95 year old veteran. South Indian actor Siddharth has given a sincere effort in presenting Othenan in his Malayalam debut. Namitha Pramod as Bhanumathy is going through multiple shades of the character. Visuals by Sunil. K.S are astounding especially in the war sequences.

Seemingly an interesting theme, the prolonged narration is exasperating and the melodramatic situations spoil what could have been an engaging creation. This film has the splendor only in the premises of the tale but not in the substance.

The makers of Kammara Sambhavam play fast and loose with revisionist history, but in a really fun way. Its loose account of history is fascinating and its fast-paced narrative a yarn. I really enjoyed this movie full of fine performances, especially from Dileep and Siddharth, and fabulous set pieces.
