Ten directors come together for "Crossroad" that showcases tales of women from different social milieu. In this anthology of 10 films, feminine issues are overshadowed by the stream of emotions she exudes in various phases of life. Each film has its own identity and keeps justice to the title. The derailment comes to the fore once you scan through the plot and the output.

Undoubtedly, Pradeep Nair-directed "Kodeshyan" is the most impressive flick in the anthology, which narrates the alienation of an old woman during her autumn days. Punnassery Kanchana steals your heart in this poignant story, written by Jayaraj. Her stellar performance as an old mother revives the anthology's totality in the half-way.

"Pakshikalude Manam," directed by debutant Nayana Suryan, is another noticeable film. It offers the effortless portrayal of a housewife by Mythili. From a female director's point of view, a married woman's aspirations to pursue her interests despite protests from her spouse are well narrated. The character announces her liberty to follow her passion-ornithology. Nayana Suryan deftly blends her family life with her hobby in the presence of rain.

Veteran director Lenin Rajendran's "Pinpe Nadappaval" features last in the anthology. With the help of a novel presentation, the filmmaker could grab the attention of viewers to the tragic story of a Muslim woman. Anjana. R. Chandran as the female lead is the embodiment of courage and resistance to the cruel acts by her husband. Unlike an ordinary woman, this feisty young woman has been portrayed as a powerful voice against oppression.

Padmapriya appears as a sex worker in "Oru Raathriyude Kooli," helmed by Madhupal. The simple theme and the characterisation make it impressive. "Kaaval" by Nemom Pushparaj with Priyanka Nair in the lead shows the grit of a widow in the face of crisis. Her perspective on life after the death of her husband has been frowned upon by the society.

Babu Thiruvalla ("Maunam"), Asok. R. Nath ("Badar"), Albert ("Mudra"), Sashi Paravoor ("Lake House") and Avira Rebecca ("Cherivu") have directed the other films, which are partially delectable. They miss the target of appreciation and land on tepid surface.

Crossroad is a compilation of ten stories which are bound together by a common theme - the approach and attitude of ten women to ten different life situations faced by them. Of the ten, eight stories have been visualized with great perfection by the directors and the cameramen. 'Lake Palace' by Sasi Paravoor, 'Kaval' by Nemom Pusparaj, 'Badar' by Asok R Nath, 'Pakshikalude Manam' by Nayana Soorya, 'Cherivu' by Avire Rebecca and 'Codeshan' by Pradeep Nair are outstanding.

Crossroads is here to stay. A melange of female perspectives that I hope will create changes small and big in the Kerala milieu. Pakshiyude Manam, Oru Rathriyude Kooli, Pinbe Nadappaval and Badar are standouts. This is what Malayalam cinema needs.
