'E' does not fall in the ilk of spine-chilling movies. A predictable and trite plot amplifies the dismay when it dashes the hopes.

The ingredients in "E" are in right proportion to an extent, except the horror factor. Kukku Surendran's efforts to create intermittent horror in a trite plot miss the target disappointingly. It's a litmus test for the filmmaker because he can't extricate from the obsolete spooky scenes. It's neither gory nor horrific to keep the adrenalin in charge. Kukku solely has the placid pond full of green water weeds and the sarpakkavu (abode of snakes) to evoke horror. How long he can hinge on them to create the eerie effect?

Scripted by Rohan Bajaj and Hari Kumar. K, a visit to the house of Malathi Menon (Gautami) by a docu-filmmaking team set the stage for this supernatural thriller. The five-member youths portrayed by Ashiq Ameer, Balaji Jayaraman, Daine David, Kalyani Vidya and Meera Nair experience bizarre situations in the old house-turned-home stay. They also witness the peculiar character of Malathi, who is an Alzheimer's patient. Her daughter Athira (Nithya Naresh) seeks the help of the gang to save Malathi from this morass.

Gautami returns to Malayalam after a sabbatical, and she confidently essays the character, who has different layers when it comes to her demeanor. Other than Gautami, none of the cast offers much impact. Quite often the plot appears to be stifled as it's confined to the traditional house and leaves no option to the director to take it outdoors except for a couple of songs. Kukku follows the template of horror films in Malayalam that obviously stands for the decimation of evil spirit. Though Gautami's character offers interesting premise, it peters out feebly.

"E" does not fall in the ilk of spine-chilling movies. A predictable and trite plot amplifies the dismay when it dashes the hopes.
