'Bobby' is perhaps best appreciated for its amusing theme. But when the whole package is taken into consideration, it's nothing more than a puerile execution.

When Cupid strikes him, he ignores the reality. He is 21 and the girl he loves is 28! The premise looks pretty good, but what follows is mere imitation of usual 'boy-chasing-girl' tale that we have seen umpteen times on screen. The protagonist Bobby (Niranj) falls for Maria (Miya George) at first sight and the bland romance commences. Director Shebi Chowgath's approach to the plot whips up curiosity solely when Bobby expresses his sincere love towards the woman, who has a tumultuous past.

It would be interesting to know about these couple's life. Bobby is presented as a patient and sensitive young man. A drop-out from seminary, he is scolded by his father Joykutty (Shammi Thilakan) for his marriage with Maria. But at one stage, he too supports his son. The conflict in the plot is inane and a little baffling. So the enthusiasm diminishes when the real conflict begins. The story becomes uninspiring in the latter half and moves towards a predictable climax.

Niranj presents his character with confidence and his energy level is apt to the role. There are no scenes in the film that test the potential of this young actor, who is the son of actor Manianpillai Raju. Miya's character, though portrayed as a suffering woman, has little scope for performance apart from shedding tears helplessly.

Shebi's script fizzles out as unimaginative attempt after a certain stage of the film and from that fall there is no revival. Things get gummed up after an interesting fun-filled take off. Despite having tremendous entertainment value in the theme, Shebi fails to cash in on it. The possibilities are not entirely exploited in the film, and there are riveting personal issues that are not entirely absorbed.

"Bobby" is perhaps best appreciated for its amusing theme. But when the whole package is taken into consideration, it's nothing more than a puerile execution.
