Mohanlal Malayalam Movie
The title and the format of this comic drama aptly gel together to provide ecstasy for hardcore fans. So there is enough justification for the mindless fun it generates and the bizarre 'star syndrome' afflicted to Meenakshi. Each character heaps praise on actor Mohanlal and amidst the encomiums, what you really miss is a convincing story that substantially establishes their admiration for the great actor.
Directed by Sajid Yahia, "Mohanlal" is nothing more than a visual reminder of his best performances in the past. Apparently, the actor is ubiquitous in the movie as the protagonist Meenakshi aka Meenu, played by Manju Warrier, has been literally worshipping him from her childhood. An energetic and zealous Manju Warrier is the cornerstone of the film though her histrionics (she whistles and shouts as a fan in theatre and sometimes beats up miscreants) even after her marriage is far-fetched.
Scenarist Suneesh Varanad focuses on the follies committed by Meenu owing to her craze for Mohanlal post her marriage with Sethu Madhavan, essayed by Indrajith. Till you are guided to that conflict zone, the premise is filled with trivial jokes and incidents that are appealing only in parts.
The character Amod Aluva (Aju Varghese) has been explicitly portrayed and we realise his intentions straight away, affecting the predictability of the film. Indrajith appears as a helpless and tolerant husband, who goes to the extent of taking his wife to watch Mohanlal films on the release day.
Yahia is subdued by the saturation of worship and no wonder, the filmmaker is presenting even a vagabond as a fan of the actor. It's a mix of crude admiration and senseless tale that wards off the logic. Beyond the mere portrayal of a hardcore female fan, this film fails to offer any convincing elements that help to bolster the content.
