Directed by Sooraj Thomas and scripted by Anoop Menon, "Ente Mezhuthiri Athazhangal" discusses interpretation of romance by different people. Their outlook defines the tenuous chasm between love and lust. Anoop Menon is powerful in his eloquence while defining various emotions of love by trying to explain that one can find the charm of true love irrespective of his social status.
As the characters put in, 'fall in love by chance and stay in love by choice' is the best way to define the underlying theme of this flick. Sooraj conceives it aesthetically and executes it appealingly to an extent. Gender, sex and social issues find rooms in the plot as it tries to trace the frontiers between love and lust. Even in the absence of a striking passionate writing, the premise of the tale and the music composed by M. Jayachandran regain the charm.
Lion's share of the credit for the splendour in visuals goes to cinematographer Jithu Damodar, who unveils the picturesque landscape of Ootty in a different angle.
"Ente Mezhuthiri Athazhangal" begins with bragging about the secret recipe of a famous chicken dish prepared by celebrated chef Sanjay Paul (Anoop Menon) in his restaurant. A phone call by Chandy, played by Alancier, from Ootty takes him to the memories of candlelight dinners and his old beloved Anjali (Mia George), whom he met at the cottage of Chandy's son Stephen (Baiju) in Ootty three years ago.
Sanjay recalls the relationship with Anjali and he still wonders about her disappearance. He owes her for his secret recipe for the chicken dish. She was a designer of candles. As his marriage with Thara (Hannah Reji Koshy) is imminent, he faces the dilemma of visiting Anjali again in Ootty.
The initial scene and the life of the couple, Stephen and Gracy (Manju Sunil), suggest love completes with apt physical intimacy. Even Anjali and Sanjay fall in deep love after a physical relationship. Sanjay easily identifies his old schoolmate Thulasi Damodaran (Nisa) in a street. He shares his anxiety if the girl once he loved was treated well by her husband now. Sanjay even visits her house stealthily to ensure her well-being. This incident points to the romantic mind of Sanjay.
Mia exudes the charm of romance in her performance. Anoop Menon lends the energy to keep the proceedings lively. Baiju is impressive enough in his portrayal of a dejected husband.
It's a search for various faces of love and the revelation of sacrifice in love. Moreover, it's the romantic musings of a hero. Romance blossoms in a different way, yet Anoop Menon's script is not free from the trite routes. It stands tall aesthetically piping the content of the romance.
