Kaala is a passable affair with the few moments of Rajinikanth being the saving grace.

Kaala (Rajnikanth) is a reputed Leader in Dharavi, a big slum in Mumbai. Hari Dada (Nana Patekar) and Real-estate Lobby are planning Big Commercial Projects by vacating the slum. How he fights for his people against heavy odds withstanding their money and Power forms the rest.

Rajnikanth rocks the screen with his larger than life screen presence. He is a treat to watch when he is in his elements but the director failed to utilize his strengths completely. Nana Patekar is a Perfect Opponent and is damn good. Eeshwari Rao is a little over the top and Huma Qureshi fails to make much impact. Anjali Patil, Samuthirakani, Ravi Kale, Sampath and others are okay.

PA R

anjith has let down the Superstar once again. The story is chosen keeping in mind the political image of Rajinikanth and further failed to utilize the strengths of the Superstar. Santosh Narayanan's music has been decent while we get the Kabali feel in Background Score at many places. The Set of Dharavi is amazing. Camera work by Murali G is impressive and the Action Sequence before the Interval Bang is good. Production Values are okay. Editing by Sreekar Prasad has been adequate.

Kaala works in parts and fans of Rajinikanth will have a few moments to Cherish. But then, the leftist ideology and social elements frequently hamper the pace of the film. The stone-age old story and unexciting narration takes it nowhere. Finally, Kaala is a passable affair with the few moments of Rajinikanth being the saving grace.
