Highlighting the frivolous tiffs in marital life, 'Mangalyam Thanthunanena' tells a run-of-the-mill and old-fashioned tale of a couple. The crude problems of the hero appear as fillers to compensate for the effect of conflict.

The initial scenes of 'Mangalyam Thanthunanena' give the feeling that there is a deliberate attempt to make one a misogamist. Gradually, the plot focuses on the tiff between a married couple over trivial issues, which clearly throw light on the uninspiring trait of the movie: full of trite elements. Written by Tony Madathil and directed by newbie Soumya Sadanandan, the narrative is intended to teach a young man the quality of frugality.

Kunchako Boban appears as Roy, a Gulf returnee, who marries Clara (Nimisha Sajayan) amidst his financial struggles. As the daughter of wealthy banker Avarachan (Vijayaraghavan), Clara suggests Roy to take over the job offered by her father in his bank. But Roy is careful to keep his self-esteem intact even after his mother Thresiyamma's (Shanti Krishna) persuasion to accept the offer. He starts to borrow money and jewels from Clara for clearing his debts.

Quarrel erupts at home between Roy and Clara over his irresponsible way of living. Shamsu (Hareesh Kanaran), a friend of Roy, advises him ways to pay back his loan, which comes around Rs 15 lakh. Now Roy needs Rs two lakh urgently to avoid the attachment of his house by the bank. So he, after many musings, pledges his wedding ring given by Clara in a private bank. This soft and loosely-crafted conflict takes the centre stage in the proceedings as the plot flounders in a monotonous manner.

Director Soumya also emphasises on the morally correct side of Roy though bank manager Susan Thomas (Leona Lishoy) tries to interfere in his life. As the plot evokes lackadaisical feel in most parts, Hareesh Kanaran provides the much-needed comic relief. The major plot hovers around Roy's debts and his inefficacies to lead a family.

Portraying the self-conflicts of Roy is just a cakewalk for Kunchako in 'Mangalyam Thanthunanena'. He presents one of the many versions of the characters of such ilk, and you hardly pay keen attention to the repetitive contexts. Interestingly, it is Nimisha, who lends the real energy into her character to make her scenes appealing. As a wife and a daughter, she performs with high intensity and devotion.

The financial burden of Roy especially his run for Rs two lakh in his own car evokes little sympathy from viewers, considering the unimaginative writing of the scenarist.
