A couple realises that their ultimate privacy is at stake due to the intrusion of a group of unruly youngsters. The subject is relevant, the way the solution has been ironed out in 'Varathan' is rather cinematic and it only suits best to director Amal Neerad's technical finesse.

There are disturbing moments when Priya Paul, played by Aishwarya Lekshmi, is emotionally upset by the prying eyes of the youths, who roam around her house. She complains to her hubby that there is no respite even while using the toilet. The predators are the interlopers on the premise of the house and Priya can't concentrate on her online works due to their peeping eyes. Abin, portrayed by Fahadh Faasil, takes it as a normal incident until he realises that their ultimate privacy is at stake.

Now Priya is desperately looking for a solution to this issue of intrusion into the privacy of strangers. During this phase of 'Varathan', the platform is wide open for writers Suhas and Sharfu to ingrain the 'X-factor' to the seemingly riveting plot. However, unfortunately, the rest of the part is the technical commotions that overpower a promising tale. Director Amal Neerad's film showcases the travesty in the outlook of the society; here a rustic area, where issues like moral policing are also happening.

Abin and Priya land in the hillside village from Dubai after losing his job abroad. As soon as they arrive at their ancestral home, one can see the piercing eyes of the villagers into the body of Priya. Dileesh Pothan plays Benny, who is there in the high-range to help the couple in everything.

Amal Neerad, who sustains a grave milieu throughout, tries to depict how the despicable act of a group of ruffians topples the peaceful life of a couple. The narration keeps a steady flow until 'Varathan' puts on the garb of revenge. The writing falls flat in the climax as if an apt remedy is hard to come by.

Fahadh is quintessential in his performance as a sophisticated urban youth. Abin is calm even in the face of difficulties, including while losing his job in Dubai. The protagonist handles tough situations with aplomb. Aishwarya Lekshmi gives a sublime performance and stands out in carrying the emotion of Priya intensely. Sharafudheen as Josy is a real surprise owing to the character's malicious intents. He immaculately unleashes the cunning acts of Josy.

Sushin Shyam's songs and BGM evoke solely mediocre effect. Meanwhile, Cinematographer Littil Swayamp's visuals are top-notch. In most of the frames, he gives the impression that there is perseverance for unique angles quite often. Editor Vivek Harshan's perfect cuts avoid the lagging feel.

This family thriller's subject is relevant, the way the solution for a problem has been ironed out is rather cinematic and it only suits best to Amal Neerad's technical finesse.
