The waft of dejà vu is resplendent in Sreenivasan's screenplay as the writer-actor repeats his concern about the idleness of youth and their dwindling interest in farming. He lambasts their attitude of hankering after lurid things sans realising their true potential. Now the formula is clear: an easy-going young man versus a hard-working young girl; sarcastic remarks against society; and the transformation episode.
Here, surprisingly, Sathyan Anthikad's delicate and subtle treatment comes to the rescue of 'Njan Prakashan' in overcoming the underlying trite formula in the script. The veteran director accomplishes in keeping the narration riveting sans entering into the realms of preachy and didactic tools.
Fahadh Faasil as Prakashan aka P.R. Akash is a hedonist and he is looking for an opportunity to go abroad. A crafty youth, Prakashan realises his opportunity during his meeting with his nursing classmate Salomi (Nikhila Vimal), who is about to fly to Germany. Prakashan starts to learn French in a bid to go to Germany as her husband. Salomi hardly realises his selfish intentions. Migrant labourers supplier Gopalji, played by Sreenivasan, advises him to do the job he learnt but Prakashan stays with him.
Feigning love towards Salomi, he extends his aid to Salomi's parents to win their hearts. But unfortunately, Prakashan's dreams go awry and he ends up in the job of a male nurse to an ailing schoolgirl, Teena (Devika Sanjay). His meeting with Sruthy (Anju Kurian), who single-handedly looks after her family after her dad's death, becomes a huge inspiration for Prakashan. His outlook towards life starts to change from that point.
With his immaculate portrayal of an idle young man, Fahadh creates the impression that the actor is vying himself to raise the bar in each scene. The nuances of Prakashan's trait are sublimely absorbed by the actor to create a delightful milieu. The portrayal of all the characters ensures a genuine grin on your face.
The unwavering template of Sreenivasan's script once again zeroes in on a lethargic youth, who dreams big sans any sincere efforts. Apparently, Prakashan is a replica of such characters created by the scenarist earlier. In fact, the reinvention of Sathyan Anthikad as a filmmaker in the narration and subtle treatment makes 'Njan Prakashan' an admirable and feel-good family drama.
Sreenivasan has been tactically placed in the plot ensuring the fun factor intact, and his voice-over from the outset sets the milieu of the sort of movie one would expect. Cinematographer S. Kumar showcases his brilliance in capturing alluring visuals while music composer Shaan Rahman also contributes efficiently.
