"Adhu Oru Kanaa Kaalam" is the type of film we have come to expect from director Balu Mahendra. The movie is taut, proficient and has the feel of something he's knocked off during his coffee break. However, when compared to his previous refined works, "Adhu Oru Kanaa Kaalam" is definitely a sub-standard one.

By rather sanctimonious conclusion you may find the movie too formulaic to linger long in the memory. But, with impressive all round performance, it's still a safe bet compared to present movies.

Story opens with a group of prisoners working in a quarry. One among them is Srinivasan (Dhanush). He escapes from prison. The news of the escaped prisoner appears in newspapers. When Srinivasan catches a lorry to go to his hometown near Ooty, the lorry driver recognizes Srinivasan and confronts him. Srinivasan narrates his story to the driver.

Srinivasan, affectionately called Cheenu is a 22-year old unemployed youth. He is a free-spirited, easy –going type who has no big ambitions in life. His father, Ganeshan (Delhi Ganesh) is a back employee and he has chalked out his own schemes for his son's future. Differences crop-up between father and son quite often, which leads to quarrel and discomfiture between the two. His mother (Usha) is a conic patient suffering from heart aliments. She is just a mute spectator to what is happening around her and she is helpless.

One day Ganeshan and his wife go out of station for a week to attend a wedding, leaving Cheenu under the care of the housemaid Sathya (Kalai Rani). During this period, Cheenu develops a relationship with maid's daughter Thulasi (Priyamani). Over a period of time, love blossoms between the two.

Cheenu's father comes to know about his son's affair with a lower cast girl, and he opposes tooth and nail. Dejected Cheenu, resorts to drinking with his friends to find solace to his miseries. Bad luck strikes him and a quick of turn of events lands him in prison. How Cheenu reunite with Thulasi forms the movie's climax.

Dhanush and Priyamani emerge intact. Dhanush because in whatever context he's 'real' and Priyamani because she is wonderfully flamboyant and throws herself into the role with gusto.

Other casts include Karunnas, and Thalavasal Vijay who have done their part well to the well-told, passionate love story. Balu's camerawork is splendid. No one else could have shown Ooty more gorgeously than Balu Mahendra.

Illayaraja's background score is quite good. However, his songs may not appeal to today's genre.

Overall the movie is definitely only for a class of people seeking near real life story with not much filmic masala. This will be the only reason for which the movie may not appeal to the masses.
