After a very long time, a creator is talking about our native story that are part of our daily life... in a very natural format, which many could connect to. This independent film making is a welcome change to Indian cinema. Hats off Director Chezhiyan for this TOLET!
Both Tamil & Indian Cinema should be really proud of this filmmaker Chezhiyan... TOLET with 32 international award wins, 84 nominations, 100+ film festivals, National award for best Tamil movie and more than that a Tamil movie unanimously appreciated by the entire world for its genuine content.
The running 99 minutes makes a viewer glued to the narration, with a simple plot of a small family looking for rentals to move in at urban areas and the challenges they had to face in today's demanding scenario, sky-rocketed rental market and the never-ending expectations/condition from the landlords.
The lead pair Santhosh & Sheela along with small boy Dharun as their son ... all three debutants in movies... live a perfect family with their very natural expressions and a GEM of performance from all the three. Sheela tops it in many instances as a lovely and caring homemaker! Brilliant casting, including the tough landlord lady played by Aadhira Pandilakshmi. The viewers never get a feel of watching a movie, which itself is a success of storytelling.
Wish atleast Tamil filmmakers cast this great potential Santhosh & Sheela in future projects... Santhosh is a material like versatile Guru Somasundaram for sure. And Sheela is an absolute treasure to Tamil Cinema!
The dialogues are so natural, thoughtful, make one really think and easily connect. An example is... "குற்ற உணர்வும், மன அழுத்தமும், ஒரு கலைஞனோடய Raw material!" (meaning Guilty feel and Stress are an artist's raw material).
Having screened across various International Film Festivals over last two years.... It's worth the wait to watch such great ones, which are like குறிஞ்சி மலர்! (Kurunji flower which blossoms once in 12 years)
Always good content will win.... even without any music... a perfect example is TOLET! Yes.... absolutely there's no music, songs or BGM in the movie... just natural sound alone!
This is not a usual award-winning type content... but the one made on our own people's story, which you will easily relate to.
