There has been a spate of Kannada films that are recently released which have the backdrop of Bangalore underworld. The incidents of the Bangalore underworld and the notorious underworld personalities-some of whom were done to death in police encounters- have always fascinated the Kannada film producers and directors who have been time and again making films based on subjects dealing with them. "Deadly Soma" released this week is based on the life and times of Bangalore"s notorious underworld Don Somashekhara alias Soma.

Soma's rise to notoriety in the Bangalore was swift and he was involved in many murders, kidnappings and murder attempts. Later he was killed in a police encounter. Soma had somehow acquired a Robin Hood image among the people, mainly because he had obtained high marks in his matriculation exams. He was killed because of his fearless daring acts, which proved costly for him.

Ravi Srivatsa who was a film writer for many Kannada films has based the story of Soma in his first directorial venture. He has worked hard to get complete details of Soma's life, though his narration implies that the don was innocent to the core and only destiny went against him. He has not only scored well in the dialogues department, which is his forte, but has been able to present the film really well.

Ravi Srivatsa also presents a good message in the film that people from underworld will have to die one day or the other and they should also think of how the family of the victims affected by their deeds thinks of the dons. It is to his credit that he has not been tempted to glorify the violence in the film. Ravi Srivatsa gives an impression that he is here to stay and through "Deadly Soma" he has certainly created a place for himself through his new film "Deadly Soma". Talented artists like Audithya, Tara and Devaraj who have delivered extremely good performances ably support him.

Soma hailed from a good family background in Kolar. Unfortunately for him despite his attempts to keep away from shoddy characters, he will be forced to turn violent when his family members are assaulted and abused. In the process he hits the brother of a don and acquires some notoriety in the underworld circles.

Later, Soma will land up in Jail for a near fatal assault on his father's partner. In Jail, he meets up a small time underworld functionary who later becomes his regular accomplice till the end. He also marries his girl friend. She already knows that Soma has already become an underworld functionary. The rules of the game in the underworld are different, and Soma is forced to leave his house and start his own living in Bangalore. He acquires notoriety in a matter of few months after eliminating some of his opponents. Then an honest and dynamic police officer is posted who kills him in his encounter.

This is just the third film for hero Audithya who plays the role of Soma to perfection. He delivers a powerful performance in the film.

National award winner Tara, Devaraj (who plays the police officer's role) are equally brilliant. Rakshitha looks good in song sequences, but she has nothing much to do in the whole film. Shobharaj, Avinash, Bullet Prakash, Girija Lokesh have performed their characters well.

The technical support to the film is of high standard. Sadhu Kokila's re recording music is the highlight of the film. Mathew's cinematography is good. Srivatsa's over emphasis on proving that Soma is a victim of circumstances may be one negative point in the film. But still with these negative aspect,

"Deadly Soma" proves to be a good film. "Jogi" which was released just last week also based its sequences on many incidents of the Bangalore underworld. "Deadly Soma" with a hero of unproven credentials and a first time director has really come as a surprise packet as a good film.
