Mayookham, the latest offering by Hariharan, is the launch pad for 2 new faces Saiju Kurup and Mamta Mohandas in the lead roles. It may not be in the league of his earlier movies, where he had the renowned M T Vasudevan Nair pen the story for him. Mayookham is better than Hariharan's last directorial venture Prem Pujari which had the then young heart throb pair of Kunjacko Boban & Shalini in the lead roles. Mayookham is different from the Onam releases in all aspects. You might wonder whether a movie which talks about love's sacrifice and sacrificed love would do well during this age of Love via SMS!!!

Mayookham's story has Unnikesavan in the pivotal role (played by Saiju Kurup with some hitches, but not bad for a debut performance), who has taken to all the bad habits due to frustrations in life. He is intercepted by Indira (played by debutant Mamta Mohandas), one of his childhood classmates in a not so good situation. From there his life takes a turn for the better. What follows is the romance between the two and complications that develop. The movie has some situational comedy provided by Indrans and Jagathy. Saikumar as the heroine's father, Jagathy as her strict uncle, and Nedumudi Venu as the hero's father, give commendable performances.

Unlike other Hariharan hits, in Mayookham he himself pens the story, and we have to wait and watch for the audience's verdict about that. He believes that the story is the real superstar of the Malayalam film industry. If that is so, we might have a hit. Even otherwise, financially it might not be a flop as it was done on a shoe-string budget.
