Somante Krithavu Malayalam Movie

Feature Film | 2023
Critics:
Vinay Forrt is a live wire in this tale of a government servant who believes in leading an organic life and relying on natural remedies. Albeit a shaky package with preachy elements, it is spry enough to be enjoyable throughout.

The film 'Somante Krithavu,' starring Vinay Forrt, endeavors to celebrate the simplicity of rural life and the advantages of natural remedies. It tells the didactic story of a young man who appears out of place in modern society. Director Rohith Narayanan introduces us to the unusual lifestyle of the protagonist, who resides in the picturesque Kuttanad. Vinay Forrt portrays Soman, a straightforward and nature-loving government servant who fearlessly champions causes that impact the environment and its biodiversity. While the elements surrounding the hero are captivating, Rohith's directorial debut lacks a more profound impact in conveying its well-intentioned message.

There are moments in the screenplay, written by Ranjith K Haridas, where a bit more intensity could have been injected. Some parts of the story seem forced in their attempt to convey a didactic message. Soman's eccentric lifestyle makes him an oddity in the eyes of those around him, including his mother, portrayed by Seema G Nair. Despite being teased by others, Soman remains true to his harmless way of life. His sudden marriage to Shalini, played by Fara Shibla, highlights Soman's unconventional beliefs and open-mindedness. As a staunch advocate of natural remedies, he even insists on Shalini giving birth at home and homeschooling their child instead of sending her to school.

Soman, a man of principles, serves as a strict agriculture officer and challenges the threats posed by businessman and panchayat president Mysooran (Jayan Cherthala). Soman strives to preserve the innocence of his village by promoting an eco-friendly lifestyle. To protect the environment, he engages in sit-in protests and even stages a demonstration to save a tree from being cut down on his office premises. Vinay Forrt's energetic portrayal of Soman breathes life into 'Somante Krithavu' and solidifies the film's central theme.

Fara Shibla delivers a fitting performance as a wife who understands her husband's unconventional approach to life. Despite some flaws in the script, 'Somante Krithavu' serves as a humble reminder to reconnect with nature, which holds the remedy for many problems. Along the way, the film addresses topics such as water pollution, bird flu, and unhealthy lifestyles.

Intriguing characterizations and the simplicity of its premise save the film from becoming unappealing. In fact, the final scene, featuring a news reporter's voice over about rain, encapsulates the film's true purpose. Despite its occasional preachy moments, the movie manages to remain engaging throughout. Its impact may be fluctuating, but the genuine intentions behind the plot deserve recognition.
