True to the title, 'Kurukkan' tries to expose the cunning deeds of two people in their own fields. Theirs is a parallel universe where ultimately selfishness matters more for them to emerge from a nagging situation. Still, this Jayalal Divakaran-directed film flounders wondrously while exchanging a deserving response to such dishonest personalities. The intended tit for tat formula is partially exciting owing to the lameness in the detailing process of the proceedings in crucial areas. Light-hearted courtroom sequences, a trend set by 'Nna Thaan Case Kodu,' intrude here too in the less-impressive trial of a serious case albeit the verdict favours the justice.

'Kurukkan' sets an interesting premise at the outset by introducing the mysterious death of Neenu (Mareena Michael Kurisingal), a social media celebrity and influencer. Sub Inspector Dinesh (Vineeth Sreenivasan) investigates the case sincerely as he wants to establish his name in the department. Dinesh has faced several faux pas due to his knee-jerk reaction to official commitments. Even his wife, played by Gowri Nanda, teases him for his absurd approach in his duty. Unable to put up with the pressure from his superior officer, Dinesh interrogates the suspects including Neenu's close friend Anjitha Narayanan (Ansiba Hassan). Finally, Dinesh decides to frame Hari (Shine Tom Chacko) in the case.

Hari usually distributes newspapers and magazines to Neenu and his presence at her house on the day of murder makes him the prime accused in the case. A techie by profession, Hari is about to set up his startup with his friend, played by Malavika Menon. Meanwhile, Dinesh arranges for Krishnan (Sreenivasan), a regular fake witness in court, to appear as witness in the case. Hari denies his involvement in the murder while Dinesh steps up his efforts to convict him. The ensuing court episode becomes decisive in identifying the real culprit.

Though majorly slapstick, writer Manoj Ramsingh gives humour tone to situations, besides lending hues of shrewdness to major characters. But the script is bereft of clever imagination to narrate the predicament and cunningness of characters in a juicy manner. The comic plot, which is entwined with the murder mystery, scores only in parts. So, the tale quickly becomes silly and fragile towards the climax.

It's a passable character for a seasoned actor like Sreenivasan as a person who utters lies in the court when he becomes a 'rented' witness by the police. Moreover, 'Kurukkan' sets the stage for his reunion with Vineeth on screen after a hiatus.

Vineeth rightly exudes the demeanours of a restless police officer, who is trying to affirm his efficiency as a cop before his superior. The hero is depicted as a sort of caricature aimed to whip up laughter and Dinesh is a laughing stock for sure but as far as the film is concerned, the casual approach in the making seldom serves any good.
