Early 1970s. Prabhakaran, a student at Thiruvalla Marthoma College, falls deeply in love with Lillikutty, a Christian girl. When the girl’s parents agree to give her in marriage to him provided he converts to Christianity, he willingly does so and adopts the name of Samuel. Though he converted to Christianity, he soon realizes that he will not be accepted in the main stream Christian community. Lillikutty in the meantime dies, leaving him with three daughters. When he gets a job with the Electricity Board at Peermade, he moves there with his family. The trials and tribulations that the family has to undergo in the name of religion form the basis of the story in Lal Jose’s new venture Achanurangatha Veedu.

Babu Janardhanan, who wrote the story, says the film depicts the difficulties a middle income family experiences, and the role religion plays in the lives of individuals. Lal Jose, who directs Achanurangatha Veedu, says that the film is not a satire on Christianity or any religion for that matter. Though the film also deals with the conversion issue, it is fundamentally about the emotional strain and sorrows experienced by a widower.

As the fifty plus old Samuel, Salimkumar essays a role totally different from the comedy roles that he usually portrays. New comer Mukta, who studies in the eighth standard at St. Augustine’s Higher Secondary School, Kothamangalam, plays the role of Samuel’s youngest daughter; Samritha and Suja Karthika play the roles of the other two daughters. After the resounding success of Chandu Pottu, Lal Jose’s Achanurangatha Veedu, has all the makings of a controversial film. Manoj Pillai, erstwhile associate of Santhosh Sivan, wields the camera
