Critics:
Gulu Gulu is a failed experiment that sets out to be ambitious but falls flat thanks to a pathetic screenplay!

How funny can it be when someone says "Gulu Gulu" instead of "Google"? The film was as funny as that. Director Rathnakumar can be accredited more as a writer than a director. His latest is "Gulu Gulu", starring Santhaanam in the lead. Rathna is the man behind some of the scenes in Master and the recent Vikram that garnered claps and praises. He seems to be good at curating scripts that are well formed. His collaboration with director Lokesh Kanagaraj is sensational. However, as a director, he had some inherent weaknesses in his previous movies too ("Meyaadha Maan" and "Aadai").

Rathna has experimented with "Gulu Gulu" where he showcases a man named "Google" (Santhaanam). Synonymous with his name, he tries to help anyone who reaches out to him. He doesn't care about whom he is helping, nor does he care about the consequences. For instance, there is a scene where he ends up slapping a cop because a woman beggar asked him to do so. The character sounds interesting. Certain scenes too are set up for these mass moments. What fails miserably is the story and the screenplay.

The screenplay was doodling all over the place. It was structured as a story that happens in the lives of many people who fight a common villain. However, in the name of fun and frolic, one cannot throw away the sensibilities. Every character was created with a sense of whack. One can find eccentricity in abundance in certain characters. We are used to seeing Pradeep Rawat as the impatient villain in so many movies. It stands out like a cliche more than anything unique.

George Mariyan as a kidnapping gang leader was wasted. Other characters were randomly introduced without much depth. The scenes were also random. The thoughts were also random. The movie also attempts to showcase some socio-political satire with annoyingly thrust scenes. For instance, the Srilankan Tamil angle was explored when it was least expected.

Technicalities were average too. Santhosh Narayanan's music dips into reggae and rap with his usual rap song mode of rendition. It is getting a bit too much after a point. However, the BGM where Santhaanam is shown as a samaritan who is there to deliver justice and love was classy.

Director Rathakumar's penchant to take the road less traveled can be lauded. In "Gulu Gulu'' we can feel the urge of a writer to stand out from the crowd. However, the writing was random, the staging was pathetic, acting was mediocre, and the film, at large, was a very tedious watch at 150 minutes. A silver lining would be the role of Santhaanam. Maybe, from here, he could start rebuilding his heroic aspirations moving forward!
