The story and screenplay of "Aarya" are so convoluted that the film has nothing to stand on. Director Balasekakaran who has already two films "Love Story" and Thulli Tirinda Kalam" to his credit, seems to have had torrid times putting this one together. He should thank stars that Madhavan, Bhavana and Prakash Raj have helped to salvage the film which was otherwise destined for archives.

Here goes the story…

Deepika (Bhavana) is a Xerox of her brother Kasi (Prakash Raj), a don with numerous business interests - legal and illegal. Kasi secures admission for her only sister in a Chennai Medical College by killing another girl named Deepika. With her brother behind her, Deepika goes about terrorizing the students, the faculty and even the dean.

Aarya (Madhavan), a final-year medical student, joins the Chennai College after getting transfer from Coimbatore. He lives with his mother and sister. Deepika is unnecessarily hostile to well-behaved and law-abiding Aarya and harasses him.

Notwithstanding her increasing tantrums, Aarya remains calm but gives her a tit for tat. However, Deepika soon gets attracted to Aarya and decides to marry him at any cost with her brother, Kasi's support. Aarya turns down the proposal on the grounds of social status, thereby incurring the wrath of Kasi. The rest of the story is hackneyed one of a nice guy and a baddie fighting it out

It is Prakash Raj, a seasoned actor, who enlivens the whole drama. In what is obviously a contrived performance, Madhavan tries to be a "chocolate boy" turns action hero. The young Bhavana is given a difficult role, a character with negative shades and she proves equal to the challenge. Vadivelu along with Prakash and Madhavan-Bhavana pair provide some hilarious moments.

With more minus points than plus points, Aarya falls under the "also ran" category.
