In the realm of police dramas, 'Kannur Squad' follows a familiar path, but it cleverly boasts a consistent and captivating narrative format from start to finish. Mammootty takes on the role of ASI George, who leads a four-member police team known as the Kannur Squad on a gripping 10-day mission to apprehend the culprits behind a murder. Their perilous journey through the rugged landscapes of Northern India and their relentless pursuit of the dacoits establish the central conflict of the film, marking an impressive directorial debut for cinematographer Roby Varghese Raj.

With a formidable lead like Mammootty, the director faces the challenge of satisfying the tastes of a mass audience, and he handles this task with finesse. The finely crafted script, with its imaginative plot structure by Muhammed Shafi and Rony David, maintains a strong connection to reality, even as heroic deeds naturally find their place within the storyline.

Mammootty delivers a performance that is both eloquent and subtle as he portrays a dedicated police officer. His demeanor may be unassuming, but it exudes an intense presence that elevates the film's momentum. The character's anguish and desperation at various stages of the mission effectively shape the film's progression. Beyond personal matters, George, a bachelor, grapples with a series of official conflicts. His humane empathy shines through when he listens to the troubles and dreams of his team members. When his colleague and Kannur Squad member Jayan (Rony David) becomes embroiled in a bribery case, George strives to shield him from further legal action.

The police officers Jose (Azeez Nedumangad) and Shafi (Shabareesh Varma) are also integral members of the squad embarked on the mission. SP Krishnalal (Vijayaraghavan) expresses interest in reassembling the squad to investigate the murder of Abdul Wahab (Manoj KU). However, Jayan's bribery case tarnishes the Kannur Squad's reputation. SP Manu Needhi Cholan (Kishore Kumar) assigns the team the task of tracking down the killers who have fled to North India after committing the crime in Kerala. 'Kannur Squad' stands out as one of the well-crafted investigative thrillers, impressing with its tight screenplay and compelling performances, although cinematic heroics occasionally intervene to drive the plot forward.

Rony David, who also contributed to the screenplay, shines in his role as a police officer with family issues. He injects remarkable depth into his performance, enhancing the emotional sequences amidst the thrilling backdrop. Director Roby's efforts to establish his own signature style in the film bear fruit as he manages to capture the audience's attention without resorting to the usual cliches often associated with police tales on screen. The sequences set in North India are meticulously crafted, and the climax deserves commendation, even though certain compromises were made in some parts to maintain the hero's aura.

'Kannur Squad' is a visually stunning creation, with Rahil's cinematography turning the setting into an engaging terrain. The compelling narrative draws ample support from these visuals, maintaining suspense throughout the movie. Despite the occasional cinematic concessions, the film excels in its sincere and honest attempt to convey its story.
