There is hardly any complexity in this trite plot of revenge perfectly tailor-made for Unni Mukundan, who pulverizes his nemesis in his titular role. 'Marco' has an opulent platform for its protagonist to unleash his wild and aggressive temperament that quite often reflects his insane trait. Writer-director Haneef Adeni dabbles his craft in a cliched tale but he smartly overcomes the limitations with high-octane and grisly action sequences the Malayalam film industry has never witnessed before. As an action hero, Unni Mukundan's brilliant agility and amazing screen presence complement Adeni's craftsmanship, blended with an aesthetic approach. In its violent and brutal action sequences 'Marco' vies with Nikhil Nagesh Bhat-directed Hindi film 'Kill' (2023) and the gory violence in the latter half obviously exceeds the tolerable level of an ordinary viewer.

Indeed, this film is stylish to the core despite the violence in its background. 'Marco' has the hackneyed introduction of an action hero, necessitated by the murder of his blind brother Victor. As a foster son in the Adatt family of businessmen, Marco is ignored by a few family members but his elder brother Adatt George, played by Siddique, embraces him as his real younger brother. The conflict is set between two business groups and the revenge tale is quite predictable. The heroism of Marco rules the roost with a highly flexible Unni Mukundan giving a befitting performance both by showcasing his sturdy physique and amazing energy in fight sequences.

The culprits of Victor's murder are vivid for viewers except Marco's family. The cunning activities of Tony Issac (Jagadeesh), who is George's competitor in the gold business, raise the bar of the conflict in the movie and this is largely due to the striking performance by Jagadeesh. The emotional angle in the movie, especially Marco's relationship with Maria (Yukti Thareja) fails to convey the intended impact as it gives the feel of a disjointed factor in the tale. As usual, Siddique fulfils his task with elan and his rapport with Marco firms up the plot's sentimental domain.

Apparently, it is the nefarious deeds of villains that ramp up 'Marco' as an action thriller. Abhimanyu Shammy Thilakan as Russel, son of Tony Issac, is graceful as a callous antagonist who triggers problems in the family of George. Amidst the banal ransom deal and retaliation by two groups, Adeni has astutely managed to elevate the technical finesse of the movie right from the outset and maintains the criteria of his aesthetic sense consistently throughout the proceedings. His unique approach to the mediocre script transforms this flick into a perfect action bonanza.

With the arrival of Kabir Duhan Singh in the climax, 'Marco' turns out to be a bloodshed action package with violence reaching its pinnacle. In the highly predictable finale, Marco's insane attains its hyper destructive mode, giving the hero a larger-than-life aura. Ravi Basrur ardently follows the proceedings with his succinctly composed BGM score, enhancing the racy premise of the film. Visuals of Chandru Selvaraj add a peculiar charm to the frames and he has brilliantly shot the immaculately choreographed action sequences.

Here, the content is spruced up by violent action that drags you in its engrossing waves. In fact, this film sets the stage for Unni Mukundan to cement his place as an action hero rather than exposing his top-notch acting prowess. It is strikingly noticeable that the actor goes on a rampage in this gory action summit and handsomely emerges as a winner. To sum up, despite its trite revenge plot, 'Marco' is adorned with haute fripperies with a compelling presentation and never-seen-before brutal violence in Malayalam.
