Kannada film producers have found out an easy way to launch a new star these days. Create a story which has some real life occurrences of the Bangalore underworld, make the hero of the film an innocent boy falling into the vortex of the underworld, include some fights with swords and long knives, accommodate spicy item numbers and finally impart a message in the last five minutes that violence and holding sword in the hand does not pay.Sishya which is the launching pad of Deepak, neview of producer Ba. Ma. Harish follows the same pattern that was seen in films like Majestick and Mental Manja. It is certainly not a fair comparison with recently released films like Deadly Soma directed by Ravi Srivatsa or Jogi directed by Prem which were the best of the films on Bangalore underworld.Sishya has more negative points than a few positive points and the film just peters out as a mediocre fare.

Sishya could have been a total washout but for the screen presence of debutant actor Deepak and electrifying performance of Character artist Rangayana Raghu. The dialogues rendered by Shivasamaya are also effective and realistic. But for these aspects, the film is total let down. You have rain pouring whenever the hero takes up the sword to go against his opponent hoodlums. The characters in the film are not well defined and inconsistent. The twists and turns in the second half are too many to confuse the audience. The songs which are well composed, have been picturised badly and they do not make any impact.

The story revolves around Vaasa (Deepak) who acts as a troubleshooter for his mentor Chandrappa. Chandrappa, a don will use Vaasa to settle scores with his underworld opponents and the real estate sharks who are his competitors. Vaasa's loyalty is unquestionable and he is grateful to his mentor Chandrappa who has provided him with food and shelter from his young days. Vasundhara (Chaithra Hallikeri) daughter of Chandrappa falls for Vaasa though it is not reciprocated properly. Then Vaasa realizes true love of Vasundhara and comes into confrontation with his mentor. What happens later forms the rest of the story.

Deepak makes a good debutant presence and can be rated as a good material for the future. Chaitra Hallikeri has a glamorous role and she can be groomed as a heroine, though she had not got good opportunities till now. Rangayana Raghu is brilliant as the mentor. The performance of other artists is quite satisfactory.

Director Vasu has depended more on the twists and turns of the story and the fights. His efforts are saved by a deligent performance from Deepak. For the Kannada film audience who have seen enough of films based on Bangalore Underworld, Sishya is just another addition. You don't lose anything even if you miss it.
