Shivaraj Kumar was the most successful actor during the last year with two massive hits like Jogi and Anna Thangi which were basically sentimental sagas. This year he starts his innings with a commercial film like Ashoka, which may have less of story content, but looks engrossing because of the way it is presented on screen. The film follows the commercial format narration, but has a different colour only because of the technical finesse. Shivamani is known for his different shot composing and very sharp cuttings to elevate the impact of the sequences and his work in Ashoka is only an extension of what he has done in many of his previous films like Onkaara, Shivasainya, Khaaki and Golibar.Sundaranath Suvarna's camera work and Soundara Rajan's editing work have provided an ideal foil to Shivamani's plans to make the film attractive to the action film fans.

There is nothing much to say about the story which also looks into some social ills like donation system in schools, greed for money in big hospitals and the transport mafia which are looting the public. The executive and the judiciary should have taken Shivaraj Kumar who plays the role of an underworld Don tries to cure these ills in his own way and takes the corrective steps that. The story revolves around Ashoka, the son of an honest police constable who desires to make his son a Police officer.Ashoka gets selected for the IPS and even is cleared by the Police investigations But before he takes up his job, he gets involved in a criminal assault case wherein he attacks a rowdy element.Ashoka's father throws him out of his house, but a determined son takes on the evil world of the rich white-collar criminals on his own.He becomes a Don and loots the education mafia and transport mafia sharks. But he spends the money to feed and educate the poor and depressed. Finally, the police department engages a detective to trap Ashoka. But after his investigations,he advises his chief to go slow on Ashoka so as to enable him to completely wipe out the mafia. In the climax,Ashoka's father realizes his mistake and salutes his son for his deeds.

Shivamani makes an interesting narration of this ordinary story, which is filled with good punching dialogues and visuals.Shivaraj Kumar plays his role perfectly and his dialogue delivery and actions will impress the fans.Suneeta Verma makes a poor presence as a Doctor and the film deserved a better heroine.Sreenivasa Murthy effectively portrays the role of an ideal father who confronts his son.Sathya Prakash and Sathyajith play the role of villains in the film.

Sadhu Kokila's music is a major weak point of the film, which is otherwise enjoyable for the fans.
