Baby Girl has received a largely mixed-to-negative critical reception, with a broad agreement that while the film starts off with a promising and emotionally charged premise, it gradually loses its grip due to predictable plotting and a dated narrative style. The film’s resemblance to earlier emotional-investigation thrillers is evident, and many felt it lacks the freshness, urgency, and narrative complexity needed to sustain tension. The central theme of motherhood, guilt, and moral responsibility is acknowledged as the film’s strongest aspect. Lijomol Jose’s performance stands out for its emotional conviction and restraint, lending depth to the narrative. The single-day structure and controlled tone help maintain a sense of urgency, and the background score supports the emotional beats effectively. However, the screenplay is widely criticised for being easy to read and lacking surprises, which significantly weakens the suspense. The investigation loses momentum midway, with the latter half leaning heavily on melodrama and convenient developments. Despite his screen presence, Nivin Pauly’s role is seen as underwritten, offering little scope for nuance or dramatic evolution. As a result, the film often feels emotionally earnest but dramatically inert. While a small section of critics found the film engaging as a character-driven emotional thriller, the dominant view is that Baby Girl struggles to rise above its familiar template and never fully realises the potential of its core idea.
Verdict:
Baby Girl is a sincere but flawed emotional thriller that benefits from its thematic focus and a strong performance by Lijomol Jose, yet is weighed down by predictability, dated storytelling, and an underutilised lead performance. It engages in parts but ultimately feels like a missed opportunity.
