Maareesan, directed by Sudheesh Sankar and starring Fahadh Faasil and Vadivelu, has received mixed to lukewarm feedback. The performances of the lead duo are widely praised — Fahadh brings emotional intensity, while Vadivelu adds both humour and depth, making their screen presence the film’s strongest asset. The film begins with promise, taking a slow-burn approach that hints at a layered narrative. However, it loses momentum post-interval, with many noting a shift toward formulaic and unimaginative storytelling. The second half, in particular, is criticized for relying on convenient resolutions and lacking the conviction seen earlier. While some viewers may find merit in its subtle commentary and character-driven tone, the overall execution lacks cohesion.
Verdict:
Maareesan is a half-effective thriller that leans heavily on its lead actors. Despite a compelling setup, it falters due to weak storytelling and a disappointing second half.
