It was almost a decade back that director George Kithu, who had got noted due to earlier films like Aadharam, Savidham etc, came up with Indriyam (1998), a horror flick that was rather well-made. And now, in 2007, he comes up with another horror movie- Soorya Kireedom and if you go to see the film keeping in memory Indriyam, you are destined to get utterly disappointed. The film is an utter bore, totally insufferable and leaves you completely exhausted.

A group of four young students led by Pooja comes to stay in an old mansion that Pooja's father had arranged for them. Things in the house are managed by a caretaker Babychchan. Pooja's father Viswanathan visits them once in a while and Pooja's fiancé Gautham too pays occasional visits. And then one day, something strange happens. Pooja picks up a ring from the floor and wears it and from then on there are some changes in her. She behaves strangely at times. On some nights she is seen walking in a bewildered manner to a portion of the property, which is like an outhouse and which is enveloped by some kind of an invisible magical ring that she is unable to cross.

Meanwhile her friends and even Gautham and Babychchan who follow her on one occasion see in her face the visage of another girl. A psychiatrist is brought in and after a thorough examination of Pooja, he advises her father to invite Vishnu Narayan, a specialist in para-psychology, to look into the matter. Vishnu Narayan is brought in. and then unfurls a tale of some eerie events that had taken place in the house in the past.

The story of how a young girl named Urmila and her husband were killed on the very night of their marriage by Sivaraman, Urmila's cousin, who was involved in black magic, is eventually brought to the light. Sivaraman, who had in the meantime mastered the art of the occult, is now much more powerful and thus Vishnu Narayan, who was once a guru to Sivaraman, has a tough job to accomplish. How he succeeds in doing this forms the rest of the plot.

Soorya Kireedom is a film that has been loosely written and ineptly handled, almost in every department. The screenplay (by debutante Deepu Karulai) is one of the most noticeable flaws in the film. Such a loosely written script shouldn't have been taken up by the director, especially a director like George Kithu, from whom we expect something good. The dialogues don't impress us at all. The scenes have been visualized in the most callous manner.

The less said about the technical aspects the better. The special effects that have been used for highlighting the horror sequences are just commonplace ones, seen in umpteen such movies. The only song that is there too has turned out to be insufferable, especially because the orchestration is too heavy and the voice of the singers is inaudible. The director has made a very unsuccessful attempt to eroticize some of the scenes. These have been handled very distastefully and just bore you.

There is nothing at all to mention about the performance of the actors, all of whom fare below average. The only saving grace is Indrajith in the role of Sivaraman, who is just OK. The actor and his character could have been handled in much better manner. Shammi Thilakan and his character Vishnu Narayan do not make any kind of impression. When the end credits appear, you would very likely let out a sigh and exclaim-"Is this the same George Kithu who had given us Aadharam, Savidham and Innalekalillaathe".
